DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY - THE OLD TESTAMENT
Monday evenings, September 13 - November 1
7:00-8:30 P.M., the Conference Room
Disciple Bible Study is a United Methodist adult Bible Study curriculum that has been developed to provide an opportunity for participants to connect with Scriptures in a way that involves reading, discussion, archeological research, and scholarly research of the Bible and Biblical times.
If you have not participated in Disciple Bible Study before, this study offers a chance to find your own way to connect with the scriptures. Classes at Lake Merritt are very interesting because of the variety of viewpoints represented in the congregation. The diversity in ways to look at scripture is very United Methodist! Please let Pastor Mary Elyn know if you plan to attend the Old Testament Disciple Bible Study this fall. Study books will be ordered ahead of the class so that you can prepare for the first lesson on September 13.
Food 4 Thought
New Lecture Series Begins September 12th
Do you enjoy learning new things? sharing good food and good conversation? are you open to new ideas and viewing old ideas with new eyes? would you prefer not to have homework or tests? If your answers are yes, you will want to be part of Food 4 Thoughts's new lecture series titled "The Old Testament". The 24 lectures in this series are presented by Professor Amy-Jill Levine of the Vanderbilt University Divinity School in which she covers not only the content of the Old Testament books, but also the debates over their meaning, the historical and cultural situations they reflect and address, as well as the critical methods by which they have been interpreted. Dr. Levine observes that "the Old Testament is endlessly fascinating because it offers everything to explore: myth, saga, and history; tragedy, comedy, and farce; economics and politics; literature and poetry of surpassing beauty; court intrigue and prophetic morality; heavenly miracles and sometimes heavenly silence; questions of theodicy; answers that satisfy and answers that may not; destruction and rebuilding; despair and hope."
Food 4 Thought meets the first Sunday of every month at 6:00 in the Edwards Room at church (Due to schedule conflicts, we will meet the second Sunday in September). After a light potluck supper, we watch two (half hour) lectures on DVD and discuss/reflect on what we have heard. We are usually on our way home by 8:30.
Though it is not necessary, reading the applicable texts prior to the lectures may enhance appreciation of the material. The first two lectures will cover Genesis 1 and 2:4 - 3:28.
Everyone is welcome and we would love to have you join us. Please contact Laurel Williams (510-521-4626, laurelandrandy@gmail.com) if you plan to attend or if you have questions/need child care. Hope to see you on September 12th!
